League Rules - Vertical Formation Skydiving

4-way FS

The South African Skydiving League is open to all current PASA SSA members and the jumps can be performed at any of the PASA dropzones.

The following VFS events will be hosted in the league:

You may enter both events in a single month but only your highest result of the two will be counted towards your individual league standing.

Each participant in the league will be handicapped based on their experience (jumps and tunnel time). This may be adjusted during the course of the league season. Your team's combined average handicap will be applied each month to determine the team's weighted score for that competition. This allows for jumpers of any combination of experience levels to compete equally. A "participant" does not include the cameraman and for SASL the cameraman will not accumulate league points for camera work. This is a Formation Skydiving event, so the cameraman is not a competing part of the team. Each team entered must have the same 2 "performers" for all submitted jumps. If a team member changes (for example, you do some jumps with your cameraman and your team mate films you), this is a different team with the 2 new team members.

The 2-way Advanced Dive pool will include head-up and head-down formations whilst the 2-way Basic will only consist of head-up formations, making it easier to accomplish for less experienced skydivers.

NOTE: There is no VFS Basic equivalent at Nationals. Thus those competitors that aren't eligible to take part should complete the additional VFS 2-Way Basic rounds instead.

You have until the 1st day of the following month to complete and submit your month's entries. The first week of the subsequent month will be used to judge all rounds and update the league standings.

The weighting calculation works as follows:

  • 1 hour of tunnel time is equated to 80 jumps
  • Jumper A has 1000 jumps and 2 hours of tunnel . His total jumps equates to 1160.
  • Jumper B has 500 jumps and no tunnel time.
  • Their team weighting is calculated by dividing the weighting ratio by the total jump numbers ( including tunnel) for each jumper :
    1. Jumper A: 200 / 1160 = 0.172
    2. Jumper B: 200 / 500 = 0.4
  • The weighted ratio for their team is thus (0.172 + 0.4) / 2 = 0.286
  • If they score 11 points on their first round, it is adusted to (11 * 0.286) + 11 = 14.146 points

Every month the members of the top 5 placed teams will be awarded league points for their placing that month. The league points will be assigned as follows:

  • 1st Place - 5 points
  • 2nd Place - 4 points
  • 3rd Place - 3 points
  • 4th Place - 2 points
  • 5th Place - 1 points

If fewer than 5 teams enter in a particular month then the maximum points awarded for that month will be the number of teams entered. Thus if only 4 teams enter then the first placed team will get 4 points, the second team 3 points and so on.

If two competitors have the same league points the most novice individual in the tied position on the leaderboard will be awarded the higher ranking.

If you don't agree with our rules, formulas or approach, by all means, contact us with suggestions. Please remember, however, that the league organisers' aim is to provide a fun, challenging competition in an accessible format to all PASA SSA jumpers. We have thought hard about our structure and will adjust as we feel necessary to keep it fair, but if you really don't like it, create your own league! The more competition we can create, the more we all benefit. Game ON!
